What to Do in Emergency Lockout Situations

Everyone is bound to get locked out from time to time. The locks on our vehicles and in our homes are great for keeping out intruders, but can backfire on us when we find that by some mistake, we are now the one to be locked out. Resolving home and vehicle lockouts does not have to be stressful. In fact, there are several things you can do to alleviate a lockout emergency fast.

Vehicle Lockouts

Automotive lockouts are all too common. Rushing around is usually the reason one may accidentally lock their keys in their car. If you find that you have locked your keys in your vehicle or trunk, you have a few options. The first is to try to find another point of entry that will not necessarily cause damage to your vehicle’s window or locks. For example, if a window is cracked, you may get lucky and be able to push the window down and fit your arm inside in order to unlock the door.

You may also have a hide-a-key or some other means of getting back into your vehicle. Special lock boxes that sit up above one’s vehicle tire and are hidden from view can be purchased to store an extra vehicle key. Or you may have an extra key with a spouse or relative. You might be able to call someone who has an additional key set to come help you.

Lastly, the least invasive way to get back into your vehicle is to call a locksmith. A professional locksmith can provide on-site assistance to help you get back into your vehicle or trunk. They will know how to get back into your vehicle with ease and without any damage to your locks or windows.

It should be noted that in the event a child or pet is stuck in a locked vehicle and the weather is hot, all possible actions should be taken to get into the car as quickly as possible. While under typical vehicle lockout circumstances it would not be advised to break a window or use some other type of force to get into the vehicle. In this case, however, in order to save the life of your child or pet, you must break a window or find some other means of entry as quickly as possible.

Home Lockouts

Getting locked out of one’s home can be especially stressful. Depending on the circumstances, you may need to call a locksmith right away. If you have little kids, elderly parents, babies, or pets that need to be taken care of and you accidentally become locked out, you may have to take action and call the police or fire department. Most locksmiths can be at your home quickly, but if it is an emergency and you need to get back into your house immediately, call 911.

If you are not in an emergency lockout situation and simply locked out and probably feeling frustrated, try to find another access point. Sometimes a back door or window may be accessible to you and allow you to re-enter. If all other access points are locked or unavailable, it is best to call a locksmith. Do not try to force or break down your door. Calling a locksmith to let your inside instead will result in less damage and a cheaper bill for you.

A lot of families choose to hide a key somewhere on the property to avoid these types of situations. You can either purchase a lawn ornament that is specifically designed to hide house keys or hide the key somewhere you and your family member know to look, but someone else could not easily find. If this is not an option that is available to you or you feel comfortable with, leaving an extra house key with a trusted neighbor or friend is a great idea in the event of a lockout emergency.

Business Lockouts

Any kind of business lockout may be more easily resolved on one’s own accord than home or vehicle lockouts. Since multiple people might have access to a given business or commercial building, it might be as simple as calling a fellow employee or manager to help you get back inside the building you are locked out of. Most businesses have access control locks these days to eliminate this possibility and hassle all together. Keypad and number combination locks are a great option for this reason. Employees and other authorized personnel do not have to worry about needing a key to get inside a building or room and never need to worry about being locked out.
